What is HyCoSy\/ Aqua scan?<\/strong><\/span><\/h6>\n

HyCoSy\u00a0(Hysterosalpingo-contrast-sonography)\u00a0is a straightforward procedure,\u00a0which is used to assess the patency of the fallopian tubes using advanced\u00a03D\u00a0ultrasound to test for common symptoms such as blocked fallopian tubes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The fallopian tubes are the place where female egg meets with the sperm to create a baby.\u00a0If there is a blockage, it might stop you becoming pregnant. Fallopian tubes can become blocked i.e. following a pelvic infection, or after surgery.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Aqua scan (saline\u00a0hysterosonography) is an ultrasound examination of the uterine cavity to exclude any\u00a0pathologies\u00a0such as fibroids, polyps or\u00a0a\u00a0uterine\u00a0septum.\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_separator][vc_tta_accordion active_section=”0″ collapsible_all=”true”][vc_tta_section title=”What are the benefits of having HyCoSy?” tab_id=”1610975871051-af8bf93a-7aa3″][vc_column_text]HyCoSy\u00a0can show if your fallopian tubes are open or closed\u00a0with the use of ultrasound.\u00a0It is\u00a0a\u00a0very attractive\u00a0alternative to older\u00a0tests such as\u00a0hysterosalpingogram\u00a0(HSG),\u00a0which is an\u00a0X-ray test involving injecting a dye through the cervix.\u00a0HyCoSy\u00a0is simple,\u00a0well-tolerated\u00a0and\u00a0does not use X-rays or any kind of radiation.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The fallopian tubes can also be assessed by a simple operation called laparoscopy. However this is a surgical procedure done under general\u00a0anaesthetic, therefore is more invasive and carries more risks.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

During the test\u00a0we can\u00a0also examine the cavity of your uterus,\u00a0to check that there are no problems\u00a0such as polyps or fibroids\u00a0that might affect a pregnancy.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It is particularly recommended\u00a0for women\u00a0wishing to undergo intra-uterine insemination (IUI)\u00a0and need to know whether their tubes are open.\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Are there any risks associated with HyCoSy?” tab_id=”1610975871079-c506d14f-45ef”][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n

  • You may experience\u00a0some discomfort during the procedure\u00a0like\u00a0a mild period\u00a0pain.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Occasionally you\u00a0may\u00a0bleed slightly once\u00a0the test\u00a0has finished. The bleeding will not be heavy and should settle down\u00a0within\u00a024 to 48 hours.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Very rarely infection may develop after the procedure and could become apparent days later. If you develop any symptoms such as fever,\u00a0foul smelling\u00a0discharge or pain, you need to contact us as soon as possible.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  • In about 5% of cases, the results of the test are not conclusive. In this case, you may need further tests to assess the patency of your tubes.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    [\/vc_column_text][\/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”What is the preparation for HyCoSy?” tab_id=”1610975937253-8c464fe8-087b”][vc_column_text]On the first\u00a0or second\u00a0day of your period,\u00a0contact us to book your test. The test will usually be done 1 to 2 weeks after your period starts.\u00a0Note that the test cannot be\u00a0done\u00a0when you are on your period.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    Please\u00a0use protection (condoms)\u00a0if\u2028you have sex\u00a0from the first day of your period until the\u00a0test. This is to prevent any chance of\u00a0you being pregnant while having the test.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    Please inform us if you have any known allergies to contrasts, shellfish,\u00a0iodine\u00a0or antibiotics.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    It is recommended to\u00a0take\u00a0400mg of\u00a0Ibuprofen\u00a0and\/or 1g of\u00a0Paracetamol\u00a0one hour before the\u00a0test, in order to reduce the amount of discomfort you may experience.\u00a0You will\u00a0also\u00a0be prescribed\u00a0antibiotics to take for 3 days, starting\u00a0the day\u00a0before\u00a0the test.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    You are\u00a0also\u00a0advised to bring\u00a0a sanitary towel\u00a0with you, since you may\u00a0experience\u00a0slight vaginal bleeding after the test.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    You may eat and drink normally before and after your\u00a0procedure.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”The HyCoSy procedure” tab_id=”1610976002750-d8ccd8ee-8507″][vc_column_text]The procedure\u00a0lasts for\u00a0approximately\u00a015 to 20 minutes and does not normally require anaesthesia. However if you find vaginal examinations too painful can be done under sedation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    You will be asked to\u00a0empty your bladder and lie down\u00a0on the examination couch.\u00a0Your legs will be supported in stirrups and we will ensure you are comfortable at all times.\u00a0A speculum will\u00a0be gently\u00a0inserted into your vagina to allow us visualise your cervix. This part of the test is very similar to a smear test.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    Under ultrasound guidance a thin\u00a0catheter\u00a0will slowly be passed through your cervix and a small amount of normal saline will be injected\u00a0through\u00a0to show up the lining and \u2028cavity of your uterus. This will allow us\u00a0to observe for the presence of any\u00a0abnormalities such as uterine polyps or\u00a0fibroids.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    Following this,\u00a0a special ultrasound fluid\u00a0will be\u00a0injected\u00a0through the catheter into the uterus,\u00a0to show up\u00a0your\u00a0fallopian tubes\u00a0and\u00a0examine whether they\u00a0are\u00a0open or blocked.\u00a0This fluid\u00a0will easily be absorbed\u00a0in\u00a0the body.\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Post- HyCoSy” tab_id=”1610976035752-60e46757-9fdc”][vc_column_text]You should be able to return to work on the same day.\u00a0You can carry out normal daily activities\u00a0and you can resume having unprotected sex if you\u00a0wish.\u00a0The\u00a0fluid used\u00a0may cause some spotting, so\u00a0you may need a sanitary towel.
