A follicle is a small fluid-filled sac, measuring between 2 to 10mm, which contains an egg. Therefore ovarian reserve represents a quantitative method, to measure the number of eggs left in the ovaries.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h6><strong>How age affects\u00a0ovarian reserve?<\/strong><\/h6>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The number of eggs in women declines irreversibly and continuously throughout life. Women are born with approximately 2 million eggs in their ovaries. At puberty the number of eggs is roughly 400,000 and continue to decrease throughout reproductive life. Usually this reduction becomes more intense about 10 years prior to the menopause, when the number of remaining eggs is just a few hundreds.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">However, the age\u00a0by which this significant drop in the quantity of\u00a0the remaining eggs will occur\u00a0varies considerably amongst women.\u00a0Women with a\u00a0small\u00a0number of remaining\u00a0eggs\u00a0have a low ovarian reserve\u00a0and\u00a0this could affect their reproductive outcomes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h6><strong>How is ovarian reserve assessed?\u00a0<\/strong><\/h6>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">There are tests known as\u202fmarkers,\u202fto assess the ovarian reserve.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">For an accurate assessment of\u00a0the\u00a0ovarian reserve,\u00a0a\u00a0combination of the following two tests\u00a0is recommended:\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\u2022\" data-font=\"Cambria, Cambria_MSFontService, serif\" data-listid=\"3\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Measurement of the levels of Anti-Mullerian\u00a0Hormone (AMH), which is a\u00a0blood test.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\u2022\" data-font=\"Cambria, Cambria_MSFontService, serif\" data-listid=\"3\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Measurement of the Antral Follicle Count (AFC), which is done through a pelvic ultrasound scan.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h6><strong>Anti-Mullerian\u00a0Hormone (AMH)\u00a0<\/strong><\/h6>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Anti-Mullerian Hormone (AMH) is a hormone produced by the ovarian follicles. Therefore, AMH levels in the blood are directly correlated to the number of the follicles, indicating the number of eggs available in the ovaries.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">AMH\u00a0levels decline with age, while\u00a0high levels\u00a0of AMH\u00a0can suggest polycystic ovaries.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Measurement of\u00a0the\u00a0AMH\u00a0level\u00a0is\u00a0considered\u00a0the most accurate blood test\u00a0for the assessment of\u00a0the\u00a0ovarian reserve\u00a0and\u00a0can be\u00a0done\u00a0at any\u00a0point in the menstrual cycle.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h6><strong>Antral\u00a0Follicle Count\u00a0(AFC)<\/strong><\/h6>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Antral follicle count (AFC) is the number of the small follicles, measuring between 2 to 10mm, present in the ovaries. They are measured at the beginning of the menstrual cycle through vaginal ultrasound examination.\u202fAn AFC of less than 5 suggests a low ovarian reserve.<\/span><\/p>\n<h6><strong>Why is ovarian reserve assessment important?<\/strong><\/h6>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Egg quantity has been associated with the chances of a woman getting pregnant either naturally or through an IVF treatment. An accurate assessment of the ovarian reserve is therefore essential, as it helps determine the fertility potential in women.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Particularly for women undergoing IVF treatment, precise assessment of the ovarian reserve, helps to determine the appropriate dose of medication required for optimal response of the ovaries.
