Surrogacy in Greece<\/span><\/strong><\/h6>\n


\n<\/span>Surrogacy in Greece is\u00a0permitted\u00a0by law\u00a0and is one of the few countries to provide legal protection to the intended parents. The surrogate mother has no\u00a0legal rights over\u00a0the child. According to\u00a0the current legislation the baby is born under the name of the intended parents\u00a0only,\u00a0making Greece a very attractive destination for surrogacy.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Surrogacy\u00a0has been\u00a0legally\u00a0approved since 2002\u00a0and\u00a0as from\u00a0July 2014\u00a0has\u00a0been allowed\u00a0to\u00a0patients from abroad\u00a0receive surrogacy treatment in Greece.<\/span><\/p>\n

Surrogacy is allowed for married couples,\u00a0co-habiting\u00a0couples or single women.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The surrogate\u00a0can be someone you know, either a close friend or\u00a0a\u00a0relative,\u00a0unlike egg or sperm donors\u00a0who are anonymous.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The surrogate mother cannot\u00a0be genetically linked to\u00a0the baby and the eggs used must not belong to her. Therefore surrogacy may be achieved with the intended mother\u2019s eggs, or with an egg donor. Similarly the sperm can come from the intended father or from a sperm donor.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Surrogacy in Greece is\u202faltruistic\u00a0and\u00a0there is no financial exchange. However\u00a0the\u00a0intended parents would need to cover the\u00a0cost of any medical procedures and\u00a0the legal expenses.\u00a0Furthermore they would need to\u00a0compensate the surrogate\u00a0mother\u00a0for\u00a0any\u00a0lost income\u00a0and\u00a0cover the expenses of\u00a0her\u00a0daily personal needs\u00a0during\u00a0pregnancy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The process is allowed in Greece only following an application to the courts. If specific requirements are met, then a permission to proceed with the treatment is almost always granted. Therefore all patients considering surrogacy are strongly advised to seek legal advice.<\/span><\/p>\n

Who\u00a0can be offered Surrogacy treatment?<\/span><\/strong><\/h6>\n

According to the Greek law, surrogacy\u00a0is\u00a0only\u00a0permitted\u00a0to women who cannot\u00a0carry a pregnancy\u00a0due to medical\u00a0reasons,\u00a0such as:\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    \n
  • Congenital absence of\u00a0the\u00a0uterus (Rokitansky\u00a0syndrome).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Women who had their uterus surgically removed\u00a0(hysterectomy).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Multiple\u00a0intra-uterine\u00a0adhesions (Asherman\u2019s\u00a0syndrome)\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Medical conditions that make pregnancy dangerous for a woman’s life, such as congenital heart disease\u00a0or\u00a0chronic renal failure\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Selected cases of\u00a0previous\u00a0multiple\u00a0IVF failures or\u00a0multiple miscarriages\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    The process is allowed in Greece\u00a0provided that the\u00a0intended mother is\u00a0not over 50 years old.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    Who\u00a0can become a Surrogate?<\/strong><\/span><\/h6>\n


    \n<\/span>The surrogate can be someone you know, either a close friend or\u00a0a\u00a0relative, unlike egg or sperm donors\u00a0who are anonymous.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    The surrogate mother cannot\u00a0be genetically linked to\u00a0the baby and the eggs used must not belong to her.<\/span>
    \nBy law, the\u00a0woman offering to carry the baby\u00a0(surrogate mother)\u00a0should\u00a0already be the mother of at least one child and\u00a0should\u00a0not have had more than two caesarean sections.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    She\u00a0needs\u00a0to\u00a0be young (age\u00a0between\u00a025\u00a0to\u00a045),\u00a0physically and emotionally healthy. An\u00a0extensive counselling\u00a0and\u00a0a thorough\u00a0psychiatric\u00a0evaluation are both mandatory.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    She should\u00a0never\u00a0been\u00a0convicted\u00a0of a crime and\u00a0should have\u00a0a permanent address in Greece.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
