Over this period he performed numerous\u00a0hysteroscopic\u00a0and laparoscopic procedures\u00a0to help women improve their fertility outcomes.\u00a0Moreover, he\u00a0has\u00a0attended an intense\u00a02-year training program in Advanced Gynaecological Endoscopy,\u00a0conjointly offered\u00a0by\u00a0the University of Surrey and the British Society for Gynaecological Endoscopy.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_separator][vc_tta_accordion active_section=&#8221;0&#8243; collapsible_all=&#8221;true&#8221;][vc_tta_section title=&#8221;What are the possible risks with laparoscopy?&#8221; tab_id=&#8221;1610974719671-a7c5d2e6-bac1&#8243;][vc_column_text]<span style=\"color: #000000;\">As with every surgical procedure the usual complications\u00a0of\u00a0bleeding,\u00a0infection,\u00a0pain, development of\u00a0blood clots in the\u00a0legs or lungs\u00a0apply for laparoscopy,\u00a0although\u00a0they\u00a0are\u00a0uncommon.\u00a0Very rarely\u00a0because of\u00a0serious\u00a0complications\u00a0arising\u00a0during\u00a0a\u00a0laparoscopy,\u00a0such as injury to\u00a0your\u00a0bowel,\u00a0bladder or blood vessels,\u00a0immediate major abdominal surgery\u00a0may\u00a0be\u00a0needed. With respect to your life, this operation is six times safer than driving a car.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=&#8221;Procedure Information&#8221; tab_id=&#8221;1610974719706-f54f2151-0f1f&#8221;][vc_column_text]<span style=\"color: #000000;\">The operation takes place in\u00a0the most prestigious\u00a0maternity hospitals located in Athens and in Thessaloniki and is\u00a0usually a day-case\u00a0procedure.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The recommended time of staying in Greece is two days. You may fly back home the\u00a0next day following the procedure.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h6><span style=\"color: #6b4f7e;\"><strong>Prior to\u00a0laparocopy\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/h6>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">You\u00a0must\u00a0not\u00a0have the procedure\u00a0if\u00a0you are pregnant. To avoid this possibility, it is important to use contraception or avoid sex\u00a0for the time\u00a0between your last period and\u00a0the date of the\u00a0operation.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">If you are taking blood-thinning medication\u00a0such as\u202faspirin\u00a0or\u202fwarfarin, you should\u00a0stop taking\u00a0them\u00a0a few days beforehand.\u00a0You are advised to have a shower or a bath\u00a0the night before the surgery. Nail polish, make-up,\u00a0jewellery and contact lenses should be removed prior to coming in.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">On the day of\u00a0the\u00a0operation\u00a0you need to\u00a0present at the clinic\u00a0in the morning,\u00a0having\u00a0had\u00a0nothing\u00a0to eat or drink\u00a0from\u00a0midnight\u00a0the night before\u00a0your procedure.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Prior to moving to\u00a0the operating\u00a0theatre you will be reviewed by the cardiology and the\u00a0anaesthetic\u00a0team and\u00a0you\u00a0will be asked to sign the\u00a0consent form\u00a0for the surgery. You\u00a0may\u00a0also\u00a0be\u00a0offered a urine pregnancy test\u00a0to exclude a current pregnancy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h6><span style=\"color: #6b4f7e;\"><strong>The Procedure\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/h6>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Laparoscopy\u00a0is\u00a0performed\u00a0under\u00a0general\u00a0anaesthesia\u2028in an operating theatre.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Initially\u00a0a small cut\u00a0of around 1\u00a0cm\u00a0is\u00a0usually\u00a0done\u00a0near your belly button.\u00a0A tube is inserted\u00a0at\u00a0the incision\u00a0site, through which\u00a0a gas called carbon dioxide\u00a0is introduced to distend your tummy.\u00a0This gas creates a space in\u00a0your tummy\u00a0so that\u00a0the laparoscope can be safely introduced,\u00a0thereby reducing the risk of inadvertently puncturing\u00a0your\u00a0bowel,\u00a0bladder or any blood vessels.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The laparoscope allows\u00a0us\u00a0to\u00a0fully assess your pelvis and if\u00a0conditions\u00a0that may affect\u00a0your\u00a0fertility\u00a0such as endometriosis or\u00a0fibroids\u00a0are found, a\u00a0second small incision at the pubic hairline and sometimes a third one to the side of the abdomen\u00a0need to be done,\u00a0so that\u00a0other instruments\u00a0required to surgically treat these conditions, can\u00a0safely\u00a0introduced and used under direct vision.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Dye\u00a0can also be\u00a0injected\u00a0through\u00a0your\u00a0cervix into the uterus and fallopian tubes to check whether\u00a0your\u00a0tubes are open.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In the final stage of\u00a0the procedure,\u00a0your\u00a0abdomen\u00a0is\u00a0deflated, the incisions are closed using stitches or\u00a0glue\u00a0and a dressing is applied.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0The\u00a0laparoscopy\u00a0takes\u00a0usually\u00a030-45\u00a0minutes, but may take longer if extra\u00a0procedures\u00a0are\u00a0needed such as, removal of fibroids or\u00a0ovarian cysts, division of adhesions,\u00a0treatment to\u00a0endometriosis or\u00a0surgery for\u00a0blocked tubes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The whole procedure will be recorded on a DVD and you will be given a copy after the procedure.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h6><span style=\"color: #6b4f7e;\"><strong>Post-\u00a0laparoscopy<\/strong><\/span><\/h6>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">You should be\u00a0able to go home on the same day,\u00a0though\u00a0occasionally\u00a0you may be asked to stay in hospital overnight.\u00a0Once you are fully awake and able to eat, drink and pass urine, you\u00a0will be able to\u00a0leave hospital.\u00a0This usually takes between three and four hours.\u00a0However, if you are unable to empty your bladder or have severe nausea, an overnight stay may be required.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">During the first 24 hours you may feel\u00a0more sleepy than usual, therefore\u00a0you\u00a0are strongly advised\u00a0to arrange for someone to drive you home\u00a0and\u00a0avoid driving\u00a0and\u00a0drinking\u00a0any alcohol\u00a0for 24 hours.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Your cuts will\u00a0be closed by stitches or glue and\u00a0will initially be covered with a dressing.\u00a0\u00a0You should be able to take\u00a0the dressing\u00a0off about 24 hours after your operation and have a shower.\u00a0Glue and some stitches dissolve by themselves. Other\u00a0stitches may need to be removed and this is usually done about a week\u00a0after your operation.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">You may have some vaginal bleeding or discharge\u00a0for 24 to 48 hours\u00a0but this\u00a0should not be very heavy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Mild\u00a0pain and discomfort in your lower abdomen for the first few days after your operation\u00a0is expected. You may also have some pain in your shoulder\u00a0from the\u00a0gas\u00a0used to distend your tummy during the operation.\u00a0If needed, you can take pain relief such as 400 mg of ibuprofen every 8 hours or 1 gram of\u00a0paracetamol\u00a0every 4 hours.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">There is a small risk of blood clots forming\u00a0in your legs and\u00a0lungs after any operation and this\u00a0could be serious.\u00a0You can reduce the risk of clots by mobilizing\u00a0as early as you can after your operation\u00a0and you may also be given\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">heparin\u00a0injections (a blood- thinning agent), which\u00a0you may need to continue\u00a0for up to a week.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">You can usually return to work and moderate activities by the third day.\u00a0Increase your activity gradually during\u00a0this time.\u00a0Return\u00a0to work will depend on the type of job you do.\u00a0You may need 2-3 weeks to\u00a0go back\u00a0to heavy activities and for\u00a0full recovery.\u00a0It\u00a0is recommended to\u00a0use sanitary towels, not tampons\u00a0and avoid sex\u00a0for\u00a0two to three days\u00a0after surgery.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h6><span style=\"color: #6b4f7e;\"><strong>Future follow-up<\/strong><\/span><\/h6>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A free of charge, face-to-face or Skype follow up consultation will be offered by Dr Diamantopoulos to discuss in detail the findings of the laparoscopy, watch the surgery\u2019s DVD and help you choose the most appropriate approach to treat your subfertility.<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=&#8221;How can a laparoscopic procedure help women with endometriosis\u2013related infertility?&#8221; tab_id=&#8221;1610974816911-360015e9-f2a4&#8243;][vc_column_text]<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Endometriosis is\u00a0a possible cause of infertility.\u00a0There is good evidence\u00a0to suggest\u00a0that\u00a0in\u00a0infertile women with endometriosis,\u00a0an operative laparoscopy with\u00a0excision or ablation of the endometriosis lesions and division of any adhesions can\u00a0improve fertility\u00a0and increase spontaneous pregnancy rates.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Following your laparoscopy and treatment to your endometriosis,\u00a0we will\u00a0either\u00a0advise you to consider trying to conceive naturally, or recommend you a fertility treatment, such as\u202fIUI or IVF.\u00a0This will depend on\u00a0your age,\u00a0your medical\u00a0history and the co-existence of any other fertility related factors.\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=&#8221;Laparoscopy for suspected hydrosalpinx&#8221; tab_id=&#8221;1610974849348-8d13ac9f-e845&#8243;][vc_column_text]<span style=\"color: #000000;\">When a fallopian tube is blocked and full of fluid is called a\u00a0hydrosalpinx.\u00a0It\u00a0can be found in one or both tubes and\u00a0is a common cause of\u00a0infertility.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This condition has been associated with a previous history of genital infections or abdominal surgery.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Hydrosalpinx\u00a0is suspected\u00a0during an ultrasound scan, a\u00a0HyCoSy\u00a0or an\u00a0HSG\u00a0examination\u00a0and confirmation is made with laparoscopy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Diseases of the fallopian tube, such as\u00a0hydrosalpinx\u00a0can severely reduce the chances of pregnancy\u00a0with IVF if left untreated.\u00a0Current evidence suggests that removing\u00a0the fallopian tube\u00a0(salpingectomy) or occluding blocked or diseased fallopian tubes\u00a0with clips\u00a0can increase pregnancy and live birth rates for women\u00a0undergoing\u00a0IVF.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Another treatment option depending on the severity of damage to the tube\u00a0is to perform restorative surgery,\u00a0open\u00a0the tube and drain the fluid (salpingostomy).
